The partition style used when installing Windows determines whether UEFI mode or legacy BIOS mode is supported:
- Uses the GUID Partition Table (GPT) partition style. GPT is recommended for newer computers with UEFI firmware because it provides better compatibility and support for modern features.
- Uses the Master Boot Record (MBR) partition style. MBR is compatible with older operating systems that don't support GPT.
To ensure a drive boots into the correct mode, you can preformat it with the appropriate file format:
- GPT: For UEFI mode
- MBR: For BIOS mode
If the PC boots into the wrong mode during installation, the Windows installation will fail. To fix this, restart the PC in the correct firmware mode.
You can check if your computer is using UEFI or legacy BIOS by going to the System Details page, selecting the Drive Encryption tab, and clicking More. The firmware type will be either in BIOS or EFI (UEFI).
